Tradutuinally in VW oppossed 4 engines.. going back to the air-cooled days the oil pump Cover gasket is really really thin. ( I like to give them a very light SPRAY coat of Permatex High Tack gasket sealer ..the red stuff ...which I could not fix cars without. ) there's also the old, old trick of turning the Oil pump Cover 90 degrees to get a new wear area on the cover going. I drove one very high miles 1.9 wbxr engine that had the oil light, when warmed up, on any time rpm was below 1.500. Ran great though .. did 300 + miles freeway miles with it no problem. Have seen engines that idle at 0 psi when hot. That was The Only symptom, otherwise just fine.

But I found out last year that the victor reinz gasket set had a fairly thick pump cover gasket. I can't recall offhand what I measured it as, buts something around 10 thou. I think the pump two case gasket is a outs 12 thou. > > My pump gear end play was within spec, but the thick cover gasket made for very low oil pressure when engine warm. I later ditched the gasket and used loctite 518 ( or is it 508?), and that gained me a few more pounds pressure. As I said, the engine is old and I am not in it for the long run so the oil pressures fine for me at the moment. > > Alistair > > > >> On Nov 22, 2014, at 2:50 PM, Dennis Jowell <dennisjowell@GMAIL.COM> wrote: >> >> After installing my new VDO electric oil gauge I finally took my 88 Westy out this afternoon for a test ride. Driving the interstate at 65 mph, oil is at 22 psi, drove for another 40 miles down to the exit ramp and oil pressure light/buzzer goes off at the end of the ramp. PSI was at 6 at 900 rpm's. Is this common? Or is there a problem with my new GOWESTY engine that has 3000+ miles on it ? >> >> Dennis Jowell >> Scotch Hollow Farm |
