Neil, I have no clue. But, I would imagine the volume of ATF may increase if diff fluid is getting in. You could monitor your ATF dipstick. Unfortunately you can't tell how much diff fluid you have without some work. Hypoid lube stinks. I don't know what a mix with ATF would smell like, but probably not very nice. That may give you a hint too.

A point of curiosity while I wait for my laundry to get clean. ;) If contamination happens, is it obvious? Fluid changes colour? Smell of fluid? IIRC, transmission fluid changes colour when it's old and-or "burned". Would an oil sample analysis be cost ineffective? For various reasons, I've given thought to owning a Vanagon with an automatic transmission. Neil.
