Alas, I don't have a very technical answer, but I have an 1988 Westy and
when my main battery starts to show signs of age, I buy a new battery for
the main and move the older battery to the 'backup' under the driver's
seat. Now in my case, that battery gets very light use. I camp
occasionally and it just is wired to run the interior lights and the radio
and I guess the fan on the fridge - and that's about it. If it fails while
camping, I'll use a candle or a flashlight and maybe have to buy some ice
to keep a few things cold. Simple for me.
Just my two cents.
