Much of the ATF works inside the torque converter. The engine has to be running to fill the converter. When the pump stops and the coveter is no longer spinning some of the fluid will drain out giving a high reading on the stick. This is much different than checking the engine oil level where you want the oil to have a chance to drain down.

Sorry for the newbie question.. I know you check the automatic trans fluid with the engine warm, but should the engine be running for an accurate level? I am reading contradictory info. Since I don't want to overfill the trans, I would like to do it right.

Thanks

Stan
