Thank you for all the information and the reference to Bentley page 42.7 and the additional information on the pre- 1983 and post 1983 variants.  I have added this note to my copy of Bentleys (July 15, 1991).
I will pick up the two outer joints that were inspected and restored by the mechanic, get some boots and keep them as spares.  If needed, they can be used on the ends of my original Vanagon Westfalia GL automatic 2.1 L cv joint shafts. 
The customer had brought a manual Vanagon into the shop and had brought in two new CV axles for installation.  The mechanic installed the new units and inspected the old CV axles.  He said that the inner CV joints were worn and were not in serviceable condition.  The outer CV joints were in serviceable condition.  It will be easier to carry the two good CV joints as spares, in case of failure on the road.
