I don't know if this applies to you or not, but I had a scrape-scrape-scrape noise that confounded a brake shop, a tire store and a VW shop before I fund the problem. If the shoes get loose enough in there, they can move side to side enough to make a noise that is not the smooth whirring of the shoes on the smooth surface.
