Yup, there was a rear cover option, a sliding affair. I think it was not offered in NA.
It's pretty obvious to have your vanagon gear secured. It's really obvious after you hit the whoop-dee-doo roller coaster bumps at speed on a logging road you've traveled time and time again.
All the little loose bits and bobs seem to elevate then come back down in different locations.
