When it comes to modifications, aka upgrades, part of a correct installation includes proper consideration for the choice of components or equipment. When it comes to switches not only does voltage and current need to be considered but also inductive and capacitive loads. There are reasons for the various designs including sliding contact and snap actions and dual break contacts. For relays spring pressures and air gaps. The point I am trying to make is just be sure to use a relay intended for the purpose. Not a lighting or fan motor relay. The fact that something can be installed poorly isn't much of an argument against them. I've seen lots of stuff installed poorly in vans, from Subaru conversions to electric fridges. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be done. Do them right and they are great. The various relay kits I have seen from Jay Brown are well made and I would add one without hesitation.
