Thanks Dennis,

I called it a ) ring because it is round. but the actual ring is square cut like you describe. It fit perfectly in the depression space provided on the valve side of the connector. I hope I just need to tighten it a bit but I don’t want to over tighten and i feel like I’m reaching that point.

As for the engine temp you pointed out to me a few summers ago that my van seemed to send coolant too soon so it is likely I have a needed improvement there!
