I moved out west during early '84 and left my cousin's place one afternoon on the Denver-to-Boise leg and drove most of that stretch at night, encountering icy pavement and strong crosswinds. A Camaro that passed me was soon seen off the road in the center ditch but my trusty '76 Dasher wagon plowed on. Only when I got near the western end of that stretch and saw eastbound drivers backed up at the closed gate on the other side did I realize my lanes had been closed behind me soon after leaving the Little America truck stop and that I had driven through some daunting winter conditions completely alone.

Yes, thanks Kim, I-80, not I-84.You may be right about the absence of people living there. But there were lots on the road, despite the conditions. At a rest area we stopped at, people huddled inside the building for a long stretch before braving the wind back to their vehicles. We spent a night in Rawlins. Bonnie was quite literally blown off her feet by the wind in the motel parking lot. mcneely
