I had one break in my 77 Scirocco. It didn't fall out but sure gave the car some swagger.

With all this work I would consider replacing the springs. Unless they are really in pristine condition. They are shot just from wear and with any rust at all they are next in line for breaking. A broken spring can make for a trip ender real fast, especially if it falls out and hits a car behind you.
