The connectors are designed for 55 Watts. Your use of non-road legal light bulbs is simply too much wattage for what the connectors (and wiring) are able to handle.

Heck, I used 55 watt fog lights, and they were too much for the 29 year old wiring/connectors/fusebox in my 86.
