If the problem is the seal around the valve stem, the symptom would be oil
consumption.  Not a big problem to drive as long as you watch the oil level.

If the problem is the valve itself as indicated by a compression or leak
down test, the symptom would be reduced power and irregular cranking
speed.  No immediate problem to drive a reasonable distance.

You didn't say if driving it home was 20 miles or 2000 miles.   :-)
