Yes, I can chime in here from my beachside camp in La Manzanilla, Mexico ! OK, here’s the story as far as I know. Back around 2010 ~ 2011, about, as I don’t recall exactly, you could order a brand new, not rebuilt, 2.1 water boxer engine from any VW dealer in Canada and USA. I made a deal with my local VW dealer to get me as many of those engines as he could. I think around seven of them eventually showed up in my garage, then I used them in my shop or sold them to other shops that needed them. Then it was over, no more were available. Then, there was always the engine rebuild program for all VW engines for all of North America, Canada and USA, that was contracted to Cummins International (I think but I may be wrong) in the Toronto, ON area, these are the engines that have the yellow or gold coloured sticker on them. The vast majority of theses engines had many problems and were replaced under warranty so often that eventually VW gave up on the program and shut it down. That’s as much of the story as I know.
