Yes, those are the diesel engines they used. While the 48 hp diesel vans were not popular here for the 2 years they were offered VW made a lot of them for a longer time for other markets.

From late 1981-87 models they built over 250,000 with that "weak and dangerous" 1.6NA diesel engine.

They built over 350,000 more with the 1.7NA and 1.6TD up through 1992 models.
