Check out Anderson Powerpole Connectors on google, amazon, etc. I and many others use them for remote trickle charging and battery maintenance, jump starting both ways, and running 12 stuff external to the car. Some mount on the pedestal as you say, my diesel mounts under the rear bumper and goes directly to the ground and starter hot pole. Buy yourself a pair of jumper cables, cut off one end and mount a power pole connector to that end (they are hermaphroditic, there is nothing special about which part you use on either the car or the cables) and you will never have to open your rear hatch again to power or get power from the battery.
