Trying to see the aurora within a prescribed time window is an iffy proposition right now. The current solar cycle is very weak. http://www.space.com/23934-weak-solar-cycle-space-weather.html My wife and I just travelled (in January) to Iceland to see the aurora and did not see anything (other than a beautiful landscape). I suggest keeping an eye on the space weather forecast and be prepared to head out on short notice if we enter a period of heightened activity. There are a number of sites on the internet with space weather information.
