What I have found is that the gas tank is usually the culprit when you hear the pump making a noise especially if the tank is original. Change the filter first to see if that does anything, if not then most likely the tank is dying inside. Nothing lasts forever. Installing a new gas tank with all new seals, and a new pump is a great idea to avoid replacing the pump every six months or so.
