i have a similar situation where I don't start my Vanagon for extended time. A small solar panel (solar Battery Trickle Charger) (like f.ex. http://www.amazon.com/Sunforce-50022-Battery-Trickle-Charger/dp/B0006JO0TC/ref=pd_sim_263_6?ie=UTF8&dpID=41moN1HIdEL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0BD0P80KA9YSYXJDXTQB) helped me out. It plugs into the "cigarette lighter" and since then I don't not have any issues anymore with an empty battery.

Karl.
