On the later vans there are a number of switches that are needed for the compressor to operate. First of course is that electronic thermostat that also acts to prevent coil freeze up. Then there are high and low pressure cut outs, (safeties), and there is also a lockout form the radiator fan switch.

Most likely the system lost enough charge to prevent the compressor from turning on. Have an AC shop check the pressure. They should then evacuate-recover the refrigerant remaining. Within 10-15% they will be able to measure how much remained. The system can then be pressurized with nitrogen for leak testing. After the leaks are found and fixed the system can be evacuated and charged with the correct amount of refrigerant by weight. It would be a good idea to replace the receiver-dryer before the final evacuation, charging of the system. If using R-134a it is best to get it from the 30 pound cans. The stuff in the store cans just doesn’t seem to have the same punch.

hi all,

'88 tin top vanagon. I turn the A/C temp knob and the fan knobs to ON.. - no power to compressor... swap the temp control knob from a van w. working A/C - still no power to compressor... all the fuses at the driver's side pillar are good... all the wiring are in good condition

- is there any other fuse(s) I should check? and where are they?

- could it be the freon is so LOW that it doesn't activate some other switch?

thanks for any help

dan
