I think having more gears within roughly the same final drive helps drive-ability. Coupling that with a slightly lower final drive helps drop rpm on the low altitude flats. If one has a Vanistan or Gowesty engine, one may be able to drop the final drive to 4.57:1 and still have enough oomph to make it up hills in 4th. And for those with engine conversions, dropping the final drive helps match the new engine power band. I recently obtained a 5sp with a 4.83:1 final, and a Peloquin diff. I will be using a basically stock wbx so I am expecting that hills will still require lots of shifting but I should have improved flexibility and great traction.
