Truls, we have had our daughter and son-in-law, or sometimes our grandkids in the back seat of the camper, a couple of times on all day drives. Communication was not difficult at all, though the ambient noise level at highway speed is greater than in a sedan. Of course if one needs to make physical contact with a child, it requires stopping. But it generally does in a sedan, too, unless one is willing to open the seat belt and lean over the back of the seat. In the Vanagon, one would need to get up from the passenger seat. Neither one of those things is recommended for safety, and we don't do them.

Nice thing about kiddie car seats is it makes it almost impossible for them to do something to hurt themselves, beyond the obvious safety that they are built for.
