Is there any knowledge concerning this looseness increasing the risk of CV joint failure? I serviced a CV axle on my 92 Golf last summer by replacing the boots and regreasing , and the inner CV joint drivers side failed last Thursday. Vanagons are heavier but use basically the same 100 mm CV joint, and put much more strain on the joints than on a VW sedan of the same vintage. When servicing the axles on the Golf I had to toss a CV joint after I took it apart and reassembled it. The balls were out of round and because I changed the original order, the joint went from being very loose to very tight. Finally got to the inner CV of the same shaft and it has two ball races with
pitting. One on one and two on another. Both joints are also very "loose"
in the sense that the inner race and cage will slide axially just by
slightly tilting the outer race to the left or right.
So this is my threshold, since both joints have pitting, both joints show
some wear, both joints are "loose" and I don't want to open up this
half-shaft again for a while, I'm buying new joints.
