It will make sense when you remove the old ball.  The shaft it slides on it not straight.  It is flat metal and towards the end there is a widened piece that the ball pops over.  This keeps it from popping off.
I suspect you will have a fun time getting the old one off.  It will be easiest to take a hacksaw and cut it on both sides.
