Pretend you are looking to check adjustment. Set a cylinder to top dead center for ignition. Push the rocker arm towards the push rod. The soft lifters will be obvious.

OK. I've got a lifter making a lot of noise. Have run the heck out of it but it has not quited down. Ran MARVEL'S through it and still noisy. Have new lifters available to install but here a question: How the heck do I determine which lifter is the bad one - or even which cylinder it's on?
