I was about to add prickasaurus to the list but I will let it go. No further name calling, please.

I started this thread and it's the longest I believe I have ever seen, except for a tire thread I think.

Suffice it to say, I have a 1988 GL and had the stock engine rebuilt locally by a very competent guy. That engine now has near 150, 000 miles on it and the only thing ever done to the engine itself is replacement of the flywheel seal, sometimes called the crankshaft seal. Otherwise all troubles have been the bolt-on parts which are (were) original parts. They were never intended to last forever. Over time, I have replaced the coil, distributor, alternator, fuel pump( that isn't on the engine) water pump, oil cooler seal, fuel injectors, coolant distributor, thermostat tower, the ECU and all the fuel lines several times. But that engine just keeps on ticking. I'm happy with it.

The '91 Carat is another matter. The engine was basically desroyed by overheating it. It's 2.1 L WBX is stock. I have never rebuilt it, and it's a pain in the backside at this point. I haven't decided yet, but based on my experience with my '88 GL I could be very satisfied with a rebuild by the guy that did it before. Will keep you posted as to my decision.
