The oil cooler cuts the airflow to #3 cylinder. Even though it has its 'doghouse' it still restricts flow. Here in Phoenix those upright A/C motors don't live long in buses unless you use an external oil cooler. Burned a couple myself in my '68 before learning that one. And you really have to keep the RPM's up under load if you want to keep it from frying. FWIW, I used the crush ring gaskets on my '78 2L when I built it for my Westy. The long time VW mech/machinist I used always used them. Ran fine for 95K until an injector hose blew and it burned to the ground. Learned that lesson the hard way too.
