I replaced springs a couple weeks ago (87 2WD) using a compressor borrowed from AutoZone ... same one available to borrow in my town from O'Reillys. Not as fancy as that $200+ thing, but an internal spring compressor and free. After reading lots of archive stuff and conflicting opinions, it looked to me like you don't need a compressor IF you take apart the front end. I did not disconnect strut rod or sway bar link to lower control arm. Just pulled shock, two bolts on upper control arm to swing it out of the way and swap springs. I think it's a choice.
