The deck height is a block thing, so that doesn't change. If the compression goes up it's because the combustion chamber is smaller in the 92 head.

The motor is a hybrid of an ABA 2.0 liter Jetta block('93 Jetta) and 1.8 liter eight valve head from a '92 Rabbit. These essentially bolt right up, 92 head on the 93 block. The configuration of the older head allows it to go into the Vanagon with all Vanagon parts and no hump or raised engine lid inside. The deck heights must differ or something to end up with a higher compression ratio....
