As far as I know, the VW inline blocks, including the diesel, remained the same casting until the Gen IV Jetta, around '95(?)....I am no Inline VW expert...I read up and learned all I needed to know to do my own motor...only...

The VW Vortex forum was one of my main sources of information as I tried to 'pre-learn' everything I needed to know before I removed my 1.8 liter motor from service and replaced it with the combined $300 Jetta stuff. The info is out there. It is just not in a 'convenient' form but it is available...I found the guys from Techtonics Tuning, a well respected and long time inline VW parts house and tuner....they were invaluable in supplying the proper parts without me knowing exactly what I needed... The only difficult parts of the motor project were probably getting all the proper pulleys in place to run with no power anything...The ABA block was 'accessorized" with power steering, and AC...I prefer non of that and didn't have it on the old motor...The second half way hard thing was swapping the distributor drive gear (without messing up anything) Techtonics Tuning had that covered,
