The VW exhaust design also shakes the dickens out of the cat, so it has to have a strong ceramic core to last.

Magnaflow also sells the smaller non CARB approved catalyst for the Vanagon. The GW muffler is also from Magnaflow. Over advanced ignition timing, excessive oil carry over, or coolant in the combustion process are often causes of Cat failure in addition to mixture, ignition, or valve problem.

The GW CARB approved cat is actually a Magnaflow cat.

FWIW... I have seen a 50% failure rate on those cats over the last few years. They seem to fall apart inside. The good news is that they have a 5 years warranty.

Cheers,

Jeff

The one easy change I have found is the Go Westy Muffler along with their CARB approved Cat. This Cat is large (and expensive). Their muffler is a baffled straight through and it is well made. The price is fair and it is what I now install for replacements.

With what seems to be the easiest horsepower gain, I continuously wonder and search for a good cold air/direct air intake. Has anyone pieced together a K&N Filter system.

Just wondering.
