As BenT and Steve Sandlin have indicated, there are 6 wafer sizes which were used starting in 1976 on the Beetles and inline water cooled (VB) and continued with the Vanagon (N) along with others later on.

From 74 back, there were 5 wafer sizes ending with the M (Type 1) and R (Bay Bus thru 79) key profiles.

I code cut lock cylinders at work for the 5 wafer models for the used handles we have in our used parts sction.. I do not do the 6 wafer locks as I don't have the newer, proper code gun cutter and carriages to handle the blanks. Steve Sandlin's the man for that.
