I used to be Polycom's Quality Manager and when I was at the home office one week someone was convicted of manslaughter because he intentionally opened his car door, killing a lane splitter in San Francisco. Lane splitting was legal in San Francisco then and I assume it still is today. Lane splitting is different from the idiots you see weaving between cars at road speed. I have no issue with lane splitting as long as there is some control and it looks like Washington State's law is heading in the right direction. Friday extension: WA is considering allowing this, now that the Seattle metro area has the nation's third worst traffic. I doubt it will pass, but it will someday. We can have 60 miles of stop and go traffic on I-5 in the afternoons. Here is the idea: "Washington state's proposed law would allow motorcyclists to occasionally ride the stripes between cars when traffic is moving under 25 mph. Because it would be limited to traffic jams, bikers could not travel more than 35 mph at their top speed when passing between lanes." |
