I ride, and if some car or van pulled up beside me I'd be pretty pissed.
Now, if another bike pulled up beside me I'd be OK - there's enough room for two bikes in one lane.

There was a motorcycle stopped at a red light so I pulled up beside him. Apparently that is discouraged.
