Because it's absolutely scary when a car pulls up beside you in your lane. You are on two wheels and very vulnerable and you don't know the intentions of the other vehicle.

The last and only time this happened to me was at Daytona Bike Week years ago. I was sitting on my 1992 Harley Davidson and there are so many bikes down there that you automatically stay to the left or right at a stop light to make room for another bike.

So, that day I was in the far left of the right most turn lane and there was a car in the left most left turn lane. In whips a car next to me and when the light turned green he turned left too!!! So here I was in a left turn trapped between two cars and during the entire turn I could have reached out and touched either one of them!

From that date on when I come to a stop at a light I'm dead center in my lane.

Splitting lanes is different. You are riding faster than the surrounding traffic and you can observe cars you are about to pull between. You can decide if you want to end up between two cars in a turn, I bet most don't.

Why is that though? Why is it ok for bikes to split lanes but I can't pull up beside? We all fit.
