Lane splitting is bikes riding between lanes of cars. High speed lane splitting is dangerous and as far as I know it's illegal everywhere. Low speed lane splitting, where a bike rolls between cars traveling slow in a traffic jam or rolls up to a traffic light is safe and hurts no-one.

Lane splitting is illegal in Alabama so I don't do it in Alabama. I have lane split in California. The closest I've come to lane splitting in Alabama is I routinely roll down the right median to a right turn. I was pulled over once by Huntsville City Police who proceeded to inform me that lane splitting is illegal. After he was done I told him that I was not lane splitting I was riding down the side of the road. He got in his car, talked on the radio for a few minutes and let me go.

Riding side by side is dangerous and I won't do it.

Are you referring to bikes that drive between lanes of cars, or to allowing bikes to ride side by side in the same lane?

I doubt it will pass, but it will someday. We can have 60 miles of stop and go traffic on I-5 in the afternoons.
