This is not a particularly fun job, and you need to be careful anytime you are working with gas tanks. Consider taking it to a shop. Tank should be drained (for weight and safety), so run it down first. The parts you need are here: http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/smartlist_972/fuel-tank-reseal-parts-c972 Replace the filler grommet too, and the fuel lines if you haven't already. Stuart

You will likely have to drop the tank. Keep in mind if fuel is getting than rain water and road debris are getting in. If this has been open for some time the tank is likely rusting also. Try to fix this asap before you also need a fuel pump and injectors along with the new tank. Dennis

Its appearing on the outside of the van from the gas cap area and downward. It has been too cold to do any work this spring so I have not taken a look at it deeply yet. I have an '83.5 but I have the later model "floaty ball" filler tube that I thought was supposed to stop this. Anyway, before I go taking out the filler tube, etc. what should I look for and are there any particur parts, gaskets, etc. I should replace just because I'm there? I've tried multiple gas caps, its' not that. Thanks,Bryan |
