The van versions of the Syncro have the spare underneath. My guess is that, being trucks, the Dokas are held to a lower safety standard (just like in the USA). Also, the Syncro will probably have different characteristics due to the sub-frame used to hold the front differential.

We usually put a rear swing away tire carrier on the Westies we refurb, but we always leave a stock spare in the clamshell.
