I am thinking on the line of oil pressure being too high, not letting the lifters behave as they should. As one turns the engine when assembling, maybe the oil pressure relief valve is affected. Happened once years ago. What to do if it won't go away? Would I have to check the relief valve, which I'm not familiar with. Could it be 'stuck'? Should I check later, if I would adjust one, to see if the pressure is normal again? Has this problem come up before with others? Zoltan

Sometimes a valve job is not done right. After the seats amd/or valves are cut the springs need to be shimmed to compensate. Excessive oil pressure will also cause this you need to check the function of the relief valve. Running with lash can be a problem. When a lifter goes soft the plunger can bang on the retaining ring. Once it fails the lifter can separate and drop parts. If the plunger pr spring should catch in that slot in the case the case is pretty much destroyed.

Hi Yes I have done this. I rebuilt a motor that I thought had no compression when it would run for about 15 min the compression would drop off to zero in 2 cylinders. Basically the lifters were over charging and floating the valves so no compression. let it sit for a day or so and it would fire on all 4 for about 15 min again. Motor had other issues but that one drove me crazy. After the rebuild it did it again so I set the valves at zero and had compression issues never again.
