If someone brings a certified check, there will be a phone number of the bank that issued it and also a serial number on the check. You can call the phone number and check to see if the check is valid. It just takes a few minutes. I had someone send me a fake cashier's check. I called the bank and gave them the serial number and the amount and they looked it up to confirm that it was fake.

Or you could do wire transfer. This is getting cheaper and cheaper and if it is just bank to bank here in the US shouldn't cost more than $10-15. I know it sounds like something out of a James Bond film but we have done it before and it works well.
