Having been in business for many years now, I can tell you that it's much more complex than your example. Businesses run on cash flow and thrive on profits and without either you have no business.

It would be nice if Kroger could sell a gallon of ice cream for $1.95 for ever and ever but it don't work that way. Many of these businesses run on long term net profits of pennies on the dollar and a small supply side change or a small labor cost change, or even a small delivery cost change can flip a business from profitable to non-profitable.

The small things you see - the consumer volume size changes - are businesses reacting to thousands of changes in the background, all leading to the prices you see on the grocery shelves!

And what does your US rep have to do with this, other than lobby for more taxes and write more regulations & laws? Which BTW also have an impact on business costs and the prices on your local grocery shelves!

It's the same with butter, ice cream, lots of consumer stuff. Drop the quantity, don't advertise it, and keep the price the same or raise it. Corporations make lots of money and the consumer gets "Chiseled". Not enough people notice, or are too tired from working to keep up, to mount a protest, and then it becomes business as usual. If you get pissed enough, call your US rep. If they don't listen, tell folks around you and show your displeasure in the voting booth. More of that needs to be done. Now excuse me while I step off this soapbox (hope most of you know what that means ;-)
