It's best to meet at your bank and make the transaction inside the bank. If you can't meet in a bank, meet in a police station.
Here in Seattle the police are offering this service for CL transactions because we had a murder here a while back during a jewelry sale that turned into a robbery.
I would only accept a wire transfer, a bank cashier's check issued to me BY THE BANK WHILE I'M THERE, or cash handed to me so I can hand it to the teller to count and deposit.
Keep in mind that cash deposits and withdrawals over $10,000 must be reported by the bank to the feds to comply with anti-money laundering laws. Not a problem as long as you are not a criminal.
A wire transfer would be tricky for the buyer to set up if he's out of state unless he uses a big bank like Chase or B of A when there is a branch nearby where you could meet.
The seller of the van my son bought wanted cash only ($13,750) and he was not going walk out of a bank in Seattle and drive 250 miles with that in his pocket.
He did a wire transfer to my account because my bank had a branch in a town near where we bought the van. I asked them to have the cash on hand, and the seller walked out with his pockets stuffed mostly with $20s and a few hundreds! They counted it both by hand and by machine, so he was satisfied. It took about 45 minutes for all of this.
Not something I would have done, but like I mentioned, I live in the big city.
A person who trusts big banks should be willing to accept a cashier's check issued on the spot by the bank since he is there and knows it's valid. But, everyone is different, and his bank may still place a hold on it.
