Thanks Matt. I reread the charge controller manual and for sure; this charger needs to see a minimum voltage at battery (8 Volts?) before it "turns on". i reconnected the controller in the correct order. No love. The battery shows 12.x volts though oddly enough, my "Genius" charger showed an odd type of LED display when I went to charge it. Humph. But my fridge runs off the battery so the battery must be ok at some level. i.e. I don't think I have fried plates or whatever.

Too many things to deal with on this old bus. That's ok. I just bought a big cooler and will be heading to walla walla in my non solar '88 Westy (brakes in my '81 are just not cutting it compared to the '88) But I digress.

Neil.
