Those numbers for the front cylinders are worth noting. May even be sign of a worn cam shaft. However, a compression test alone is often a waste of time. Combined with a leak down test you would know if you have a valve or ring problem. Then as for looking for internal leaks you secure the engine, bypass the gauge and put full shop pressure into each cylinder. If coolant suddenly raises in the tank you know you have a problem and in which cylinder. Yes small leaks or those heat and load related may not always be apparent this way.

Shameful part is that it's running pretty good.

That river in Egypt (Denial) hopes it's just a leak due to a loose coolant hose clamp but....

engine compression test done a while ago by a Vanagon shop showed:

130      120
140      140

I posted results here and was told they were below spec. But since the vehicle had decent power and since, IMO, the tech may still have been an apprentice, I assumed the compression check may have been done incorrectly.
