If your '88 has an automatic transmission, the driveshafts are
different lengths. Manual transmission, shafts are equal length. When
you move the shaft, it's not hitting the brake drum.
Some side to side movement is normal. What you're feeling are the
parts of the CV itself moving. I'm looking in Bentley 42.7 and only
see one circlip shown, but IIRC there should be a circlip at each end
of each axle to keep the CV hub (and rest of CV parts) from moving off
the driveshaft.
