KEP http://www.kennedyenginc.com/Pages/EngineOptionList4cyl.aspx shows this Nissan engine as an option: 4800 *Nissan SR 20*, '91-94 , Sentra SE-R. 2 liter 16 valve, 140HP. Of course that engine is likely "miles" away from what you saw but given the listing, my assumption would be that one would need an adaptor plate.... if'n the engine would even fit the Vanagon compartment.
