About a year ago I stumbled upon a Eurovan in a junkyard. Don't know the year or engine size. Peering under the hood on the driver's side I saw a relay with substantial wires leading to the positive battery terminal and the starter solenoid. A smaller wire went off apparently to the ignition switch. I said "Aha! The VW engineers have admitted they were wrong on the previous generations." I extracted the relay and plan to install it in a vanagon, one of these days. (Too many vanagons, too little time.)
