When we did Paul's van last year (or maybe it is two years ago now) I got him a brand new compressor from Sanden. It had a restrictor built into one of the ports (I forget which). When I called them to ask about this, they said that it was to help the compressor work better with R134a. It worked very well with it, although I did have to modify one of the tubes to be able to seat into the rear of the compressor properly (I had to shorten the end by 1/8" if I remember correctly). If you just want the system to be cool, you can do this by just charging it up and hoping for the best. If you want it to be cold then you are going to need to replace some parts and clean some things and it can get expensive really quickly. But the system from the 86-91 is the nicest one they made and it can work very well if things are right.
