You guys haven’t driven a Subaru 2.2, and don’t, or you will be unhappy! Folks claim 20-22 mpg, but I can’t confirm.
Diesel is $3.80 here, gas $2.80, or 26% less, so it would cost more to drive. I’ll give you the advantage of no electronics though!
And anything is better than the WBX.

I drove an automatic TDI install done for a list member by Scott Foss a few years back. It was great.

It wouldn't be great with my automatic transmission. I get a headache when
stuck in traffic behind old diesel vehicles, and won't do that to anyone
else.

50% more mileage. No electronics to fail, just one solenoid that can be
replaced easily that turns off the fuel. Easy mods for more power, once the
intercooler is added. The low end torque makes it much more drivable that a
high-strung 'modern gas engine' that makes all of its power above 4000 rpm.
Stuart - you need to ride in a TDI set up like mine - you'd forget about
that Subie idea. Way more torque than the Subie and 25-30 mpg. Torque max at
1900-2500, depending on the tuning. Ability to crawl over anything with
barely any throttle input. Relaxed, guttural, soothing torque. :-)
BTW, this is NOT the same engine as any TDI from 1996-on - it is an engine
option that was available in the Canadian market and Europe until 1996, when
the TDI came out with far more power.
