Oh, I am quite certain that you were dealing with caliche. I have been on it quite a few times, especially in West Texas. Slicker than owl grease when wet, and quite sloppy, almost fluid on the surface. There is a pinkish tint to it in much of West Texas, eastern New Mexico.
